Vampire Facelift® – Quick Facial Rejuvenation

The Vampire Facelift® is a procedure developed for people who want healthy, youthful, and rejuvenated skin, but done quickly and without surgery. This procedure is able to do this by harnessing your own body’s healing and regenerative properties. The Vampire Facelift® is an outpatient procedure, and results can be experienced on the same day, with continual benefit of skin regeneration lasting for months—even over a year—after the procedure.

The Vampire Facelift® is actually not a surgical facelift at all, but rather a type of skin treatment using the body’s own natural healing and growth factors that are derived from your own blood (hence the name The Vampire Facelift®), sometimes combined with a hyaluronic acid dermal filler. What is a Vampire Facelift?

The Vampire Facelift® is a “designer procedure” developed as a way to enhance volume in the face using a combination of optional hyaluronic acid (such as Restylane) and platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM), which is a thicker form of platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

The key ingredient of the Vampire Facelift® is platelet-rich fibrin matrix, which is derived from the patient’s own blood before being mixed with other factors. Platelet-rich fibrin matrix starts with a blood draw, just like any normal blood test.

The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then separated by spinning the patient’s blood through a centrifuge. Platelet-rich plasma appears as a clear yellow serum after it is separated from the darker components made mostly of red blood cells.

Calcium chloride (CaCl) (a natural mineral already existing in every human body) or another activator can be added to the PRP to turn it into the thicker and longer lasting platelet-rich fibrin matrix. Platelet-rich plasma is used in the medical field in this way already for its wound and injury healing properties. It also stimulates the production of collagen and is used for tissue regeneration.

These properties makes platelet-rich fibrin matrix an ideal natural serum for rejuvenating facial skin quality and volume with increased collagen production, blood supply, and new skin and fatty tissue generation, creating that youthful appearance that comes with healthier skin.

The procedure was made famous by Kim Kardashian, who underwent a procedure called “The Vampire Facial” in 2013 (referring to it as a “blood facial”). However, when The Vampire Facelift® or the Vampire Facial is done properly; the patient will not experience any significant pain or have much blood on their face, unlike Kim Kardashian’s much publicized experience with the procedure.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers for Adding Youthful Volume

The first step of The Vampire Facelift® is the application of an injectable hyaluronic acid dermal filler like Restylane or Juvederm. One of the two main components of the facial aging process is the loss of volume due to a reduction of facial bone, muscle and fat in an area known as “the apples of the cheeks”. This step is optional and is not done on every patient.

Dermal fillers add youthful volume to the face, while keeping a natural appearance. Hyaluronic acid fillers do not paralyze facial muscles like Botox, so volume is added without inhibiting facial movement or expressions. There is an art to the application of fillers for a natural and youthful appearance. For those who prefer not to use fillers, an extra preparation of you own PRP substance can be placed in the apples of the cheeks for a more subtle, natural lift.

Rejuvenating Facial Skin from Within

The platelet-rich fibrin matrix is placed in a specific manner and depth of skin after a soothing numbing cream has been applied, resulting in a near painless application. Platelet-rich fibrin matrix contains at least eight of the body’s own concentrated growth factors to rejuvenate the face in several ways:

1. Increases the formation of new blood vessels (also called “neovascularization”) and increases the blood flow to the skin, resulting in healthier, better quality skin.

The Vampire Facelift® on Smokers

Cigarette smoke interferes with the body’s growth factors and with tissue healing and regeneration. If you do smoke, please be aware that The Vampire Facelift® will not produce the same dramatic results as it would in a non-smoker. Smokers may be better off with hyaluronic acid filler application such as Restylane or Juvederm rather than using platelet-rich fibrin matrix. How do you get my blood?

A medical staff member simply draws your blood like a normal blood test. The arm area is gently numbed so that even this small procedure is pain free. The blood is processed so the platelets (cells which stimulate collagen for healing) are separated from the red blood cells. The separated material is called platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

How soon after the Vampire Facelift® can I go back to work?

How long does the Vampire Facelift® last?

The renewal effects of the procedure continues for the first few months. Depending on the individual’s response and overall health, the effects can last for over a year.

Difference between a Vampire Facelift® and a Regular Facelift

Many people coming to our practice choose the Vampire Facelift® because it’s a non-surgical procedure. The term “facelift” when used in the context of the “Vampire Facelift®” describes how volume placed artistically and strategically under the skin can “lift” the skin away from the bony structure creating a more youthful appearance. As people get older, the fat under the skin decreases making the person look more hollow.

A facelift is a surgical procedure to reposition sagging cheeks and skin to improve the face, jawline and neck. Many people are hesitant to have surgery because of the risks of anesthesia and the healing process.

Vampire Facelift® or Vampire Facial® ?

In contrast to the Vampire Facelift®, the Vampire Facial® does not use any fillers or injections of PRP. The purpose of the Vampire Facial® is to use PRP to enhance the benefits of micro-needling, with a device such as the Dermapen, by applying PRP (platelet-rich plasma) during and after the micro needling process.

Dr. Daughtrey customizes the depth and the rate at which the micro-needling is done in order to get the most benefit from the treatment for each patient. Micro-needling is skill which is not performed in the same way by every practitioner.

The combination of micro-needling with application of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) results in the stimulation of collagen and improvement of the skin.

The Vampire Facelift as performed by Dr Daughtrey usually includes a session of the Vampire Facial.

Vampire Facelift® or Synthetic Fillers

Unlike other injectables such as Artefill, the Vampire Facelift® is natural since it uses the patient’s own healing and growth factors, collected from their blood, in combination with hyaluronic acid filler to revitalize the face. Hyaluronic acid is a substance which is naturally present in the human body.

When it comes to wound-healing, there is a well documented synergistic benefit from using hyaluronic acid filler with platelet-rich plasma. Synthetic fillers alone have not shown this benefit and have other risks, which make hyaluronic acid a preferred filler for the Vampire Facelift®.

Botox is very different than dermal fillers as it is a neurotoxin which decreases muscle activity by affecting nerves which stimulate a particular muscle. This procedure does NOT use botox.

Is the Vampire Facelift® considered a “liquid facelift”?

The term “liquid facelift” was used to describe the use of several different types of injectables to enhance a person’s appearance. This means that technically the Vampire Facelift® is a type of “liquid facelift”.

Various type of fillers can be use to get some of the effect of a facelift, from Botox to using your own fat (referred to as fat transfer or fat grafting). Depending on your personal situation, a liquid facelift might be a better option than a facelift, which you can still consider in the future.

How much does the Vampire Facelift® cost?

The cost of a liquid facelift is dependent on Dr. Daughtrey’s evaluation of your needs. It’s important that you have a proper evaluation to determine if you are a candidate. Fees are usually determined after she performs your initial examination.
